Built simply to accommodate post-hunt banquets for the King and his guests, the Eremitage Hunting Lodge sits grandly atop the highest point of the Jaegersborg Deer Park. Completed in 1736 and exceptionally well preserved, the lodge is one of the most prime examples of late-Baroque architecture in Denmark. Rather unfortunately, it is closed to the public, though the lodge still serves as significant landmark and with a crystalline view over the plain where some 2000 deer, of three different species, roam freely through the park.
The lodge is located approximately four kilometers to the north of Klampenborg train station, which is only a twenty minute ride from central Copenhagen. From the station walk straight through the characteristic red gates that enter into the park, and head north until the forest thins out and you reach the plain. The palace should be clearly visible on the rise of the hill. The exterior of the building completed its renovation in 1991, doing justice to the Greek Mythological themed adornments which you can search for while admiring this impressive example of royal excess.
Visit the Eremitage Hunting Lodge as an excuse to stretch your weary urban legs and take a break from the claustrophobia of city life.
