Founded by monks of the order of St. Hohn in the 15th century, Kongens Have (King’s Garden) was the original stomping ground of the monastery of the same name. After the Reformation in 1536, the monastery and surrounding garden were passed to the crown. Kongens Have was then laid out as a Baroque garden in the 1720s, designed by Johann Cornelius Krieger.
Though its illustrious past has witnessed many changes, parts of the original garden can still be found. Statues, like one of fairy tale scribe Hans Christian Anderson surrounded by children, dot the lush green lawns. Today the garden often functions as a backdrop for various outdoor cultural activities like open-air concerts and carnivals.
