Flowing with good stories and the drunks who tell them, this legendary old bar was once the place of sailors, whores and sullen drinking. Today, the place still reeks of its illustrious past, replete with mirrored walls, depictions of the Eiffel Tower, and a ‘50s classics jukebox.
Its weathered appearance is part of its appeal—and part of its lease, as enshrined in the contract for any future buyers is that no radical changes may be made to the interior or exterior of the bar.
Nowadays expect a more subdued experience than its wild earlier times. Extremely cheap drinks and beers—and sometimes the classic Danish Smørrebrød (buttered bread)—attracts pipe-smoking intellectuals, students and, well, old drunks. Some things really don’t change.
